Why we made mental health a priority

Although there is a lot of emphasis on the importance of mental health, we feel there is a huge amount that needs to be done to support those experiencing issues.

Mind’s The Big Mental Health Report 2024 for England and Wales shows us that:

  • Adults and young people feel their wellbeing is declining
  • Financial hardship and poor mental health are creating a vicious cycle for many
  • Stigma and discrimination appear to be backsliding

Severe mental illness challenges

  • In 2023, 6,069 registered deaths were caused by suicide, 75% were men
  • Life expectancy is around 15-20 years shorter than those without
  • Sufferers are 5 times more likely to die before reaching 75 than the rest of the UK population
  • Challenges are compounded by social injustices, discrimination and disadvantage

School-age children and young people with a mental health condition

  • A staggering 1 in 5 has a mental health issue. Help isn’t always available. Only a third could access treatment last year in England
  • In England, 11% of 8–16-year-olds missed more than 15 days of school in 1 term
  • There was a 34-percentage point increase in the number referred with anxiety in Wales between 2015/16 and 2022/23
  • They are significantly more likely to have been bullied online

The term ‘Mental health conditions’ covers a broad range of conditions, namely:

Agoraphobia ∙ Anorexia nervosa ∙ Antisocial personality disorder ∙ Binge eating disorder ∙ Bipolar disorder ∙ Body dysmorphic disorder ∙ Borderline personality disorder ∙ Bulimia ∙ Claustrophobia ∙ Cyclothymia ∙ Depression ∙ Dissociative disorders ∙ Eating disorders ∙ Fabricated or induced illness ∙ Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) ∙ Health anxiety ∙ Hoarding disorder ∙ Munchausen syndrome ∙ Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) ∙ Panic disorder ∙ Personality disorder ∙ Phobias ∙ Postnatal depression ∙ Postpartum psychosis ∙ Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) ∙ Psychosis ∙ Psychotic depression ∙ Schizophrenia ∙ Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) ∙ Selective mutism ∙ Skin picking disorder ∙ Social anxiety (social phobia) ∙ Stress ∙ Trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder)

How we help in the area of mental health

Naturally, people suffer to varying degrees. We always aim to help those most in need, so we tend to provide support for those who are unable to function ‘normally’, to the extent where it hugely impacts their daily life.

Transforming People’s Lives has been instrumental in utilising charities within this sector to make sure that monies are paid to support people with mental health difficulties.

There’s more work to be done

We are always looking for more ways to help more people in need. We reach out to, and are always keen to hear from, smaller charities who help those most in need due to their mental health struggles.
