Why we made homelessness a priority

We believe everyone deserves to have a home, where they can keep dry and warm, sleep in a comfortable bed and feel safe.

With so many people living on the streets or suffering from less visible forms of homelessness, such as living in unsuitable temporary accommodation, couch surfing or staying in a refuge, it’s an area that simply cannot be ignored.

Children who don’t have a safe and stable home are prone to feeling stressed and anxious. It has a major impact on their mental wellbeing. And if the issue is a long-term one, they may be left with serious emotional trauma which can also affect their physical health.

The stress of not having the regular day-to-day practicalities that most of us take for granted – like not being able to keep their personal belongings or having access to a bathroom – can have a huge impact on their future.

For adults with families, they carry the burden of not being able to give their children a comfortable home they can call their own. It takes a devastating toll on them and their wellbeing.

For adults without children, they too will face a knock-on-effect of homelessness in various ways. It’s harder to secure and maintain employment, mental and physical health is likely to decline, everyday activities become difficult, relationships suffer, and they face stigma and discrimination. It’s an unimaginable position to be in.

The figures:

According to Crisis, recent figures showed that the number of children in temporary accommodation was up by 15% in England alone, reaching a record high.

As of 30th June 2024, there were 159,380 children in temporary accommodation – up 14.6% on the same quarter in 2023. It is growing at an alarming rate and clearly more needs to be done.

How we help in the area of homelessness

Transforming People’s Lives always aims to help those in the most vulnerable positions by providing funding for a safe shelter.

We understand the consequences having no home can have and we are committed to doing all we can to help as many people and communities as possible.

There’s more work to be done

We are always looking for more ways to help more people in need. We reach out to, and are always keen to hear from, smaller charities who help those most in need of shelter.
